Stuff I Wanna Do

Well, there are many things I would like to do, but there are a few upcoming events I am excited about....

First is selected reading about bird behaviour at my local library, as part of Litfest: Edmonton's Nonfiction Festival. A couple of authors (Brian Brett & Candace Savage) are reading from their work and getting involved in a discussion about birds. The description reads like this:

Delve into the secret lives of birds, both in the wild and in something approaching domesticity. Stories by renowned natural enthusiasts and authors Brian Brett and Candace Savage lead into a discussion of our complex relationships with birds.

It's being held in a couple of weeks. I am not sure yet if I will be going because I will probably be going alone and that can be intimidating (I am not acquainted with very many people who enjoy birds).

The second event is called Alberta Bound, a body modification conference. I am fascinated with tattoos (don't have any) and piercings (still just have the one in my hand). I find a wide variety of tattoos quite breathtaking or cool, and I am interested in certain unusual piercings. I will be going with my 16-year-old daughter and her friend.

Years ago my friends used to tell me I would be a good tattoo artist because my artistic style was quite suited to it, and in some ways that may be true, especially with some of the brighter-coloured mandalas I created at work a few months ago. Then I watched a friend of mine get a tattoo, and it made me itch to try tattooing, but I think I will toss that idea onto my pile of unrealized dream jobs! I am not a people person, and I am quite inflexible with my art. Plus... who would trust a tattoist who has no tattoos?

**********

The third event is a stop on the PostSecret Tour. The creator of PostSecret, Frank Warren, is travelling to promote his newest book (PostSecret: Confessions on Life, Death and God) and to create a safe venue for people to share their secrets. If you are not familiar with the project, according to the PostSecret website:

PostSecret is an ongoing community art project where people mail in their secrets anonymously on one side of a postcard.

I am also attending this event with my daughter and her friend.

**********

When I was younger I used to attend lots of fun events and got involved in community activities a lot more. After I had a child and got immersed in the working world I stopped getting involved in as much stuff. Plus for a few years I was living very remotely.

But now that I have been back in a city I am doing more activities again. I've seen 3 live musicians in the last year, for instance. And a year ago I went to a Neuroscience multidisciplinary conference with my child (who would like to be a psychologist someday). I look forward to getting involved in even more things soon. Perhaps, for me, it is a sign of better mental health?

Something else you might enjoy is Kaffe Fassett, the renowned knitter and quilter at the Museum on Oct 5. Short notice, I know.

I'd love to see Kaffe Fassett! I love his fabrics and knitting patterns. Did you see Kaffe Fassett's Liberty art fabrics? (some are here. Gorgeous!!!

I'm so proud of you for going to all of these events; I think it's definitely an indication that you're doing better mentally. Also, you've got more time to do stuff because your daughter is growing up. And you have the opportunity to do things because you're in the city.

Just think of all the things you could do in Toronto (hint, hint). Have you convinced your daughter that she wants to go to the UofT yet? maybe for grad studies? :)

Love you,
Chantelle

Oh, and I forgot to say that I actually like tattoos and piercings. I especially have a fascination for corset piercings.

I sort of like the idea of tattoos as clothing, where they cover the skin completely. And I love "tribal" tattoos. I like tattoos that mean something.

I definitely don't love the usual, trendier style of tattoos - tramp stamps and arm circle tattoos - or portraits because they don't look right. then again, I don't like portrait art, either.

love you,
Chantelle

mom, Kaffe Fassett's stuff looks pretty cool! unfortunately i don't have enough time in ym schedule to squeeze that in. too bad, because the quilts look amazing!

chantelle, i also like extensive tattoos, though i am not sure what style i like best. i definitely prefer if the natural contours and features of the body are integrated. my fave tattoo i've ever seen is one that looks like a person's feet were cut off and reattached. it looks disgusting yet so realistic and cool.

bean, that would be fun! i'll send you an email with some details. it took me a couple of days to respond, because the timing overlaps with my aspie support group, so i had to decide which thing to attend. but most people don't go to the support group every single time, so i think i will skip it this time.

love,
vicki
